Where do I even start from? Is it the struggle of growing my hair or the baldness? I have heard about the hair loss after birth but never thought it is this bad. With my first child, I did experience some breakages but nothing serious. But with my second child, I just had the worst experience. I thought I was going to keep all the hair I grew while pregnant only to find out I am actually going to lose it.
Over the months, my edges has been thining, hair always falling out and the final moment I couldn’t take it any more was that chunk of hair in the bath tub, infact I was SHOOK. Honestly, I find it hard to cater for my hair, I am the last person passionate about hair. Left with me, I will be rocking short hair for life just like my paternal Grandma. And to think I have two girls, oh Lord. I was managing what I had on my hair until I was left with a bald patch. I remember going into a panick mode thinking I was going bald and also wondaring what I was going to tell my husband. I am known to be cutting my hair randomly and I promised him I will not do that any more but this time around, I had no choice. I did my little research and found out, it is just a temporary phase. Girl, was I relieved. The things our body goes through as a woman is just unimaginable.
What really causes it?
During pregnancy, your estrogen freezes your hair from growing. Majority of the hair on your head is actively growing, while the other is in a resting stage. The ones that you shed on a normal base, won’t and that is how you get that thick beautiful hair when pregnant. After birth your estrogen levels decline and all the hair that was resting starts to fall out.
As I said, my edges was thining out but I noticed the chunk during my 7month postpartum.
How do you prevent it?
Apparently you won’t be able to prevent the hair from falling out, but what you can do is keep letting your hair look good.
• Get a cut; With me, I just chopped it all off so I can start it all over.
• Wear wigs. What I did a lot during this transition was to wear wigs. Very easy
• This is the time to try something new like coloring your hair. The coloring helps in hiding the spots.
• Part your hair differently, wear hair bands, brush your hair backwards.
Always remember to seek advice from your doctor if you think you are loosing too much hair.
